Do the embroidery before assembling the garment.


Mark the outline of the pattern on a piece of fabric and cut it out roughly several inches beyond the outline to give yourself plenty of room to hoop the fabric.

Mark the placement of the embroidery design by basting horizontal and vertical lines to align the hoop accurately.

Purchased garments are more of a challenge –  you will need the basted lines and may have to unpick a seam or two.
